The decisions I made when encoding this text primarily come from a point of accessibility. Someone unfamiliar with Lewis Carroll and/or this poem may not be expecting the ratio of invented words to traditional English, and would have to spend some time to understand the point attempting to be made. My annotations primarily involve the addition of definitions, along with an attempt at properly reconstructing the original structure (as shown on the Poetry Foundation record of the poem).
Rather than attempting to interpret the work for a reader, my intent is first and foremost to make the interpretation easier on the reader. Drawing my personal interpretations of Carroll's work seems rather shortsighted, as my own analytical skills with regards to poetry are somewhat sparse. As such, my attempt was to amplify Carroll's original intentions, without highlighting any, so that the reader can have an experience with the work that is fully their own, rather than an experience tainted by my analysis of the poem.
The encoding did not change my understanding of the poem, however I did learn that most of the invented words in the poems have a commonly-attributed meaning, and Carroll himself has defined several of them. Additionally, the encoding process brought me significantly more respect for scholars who do similar work, such as those associated with the Internet Archive and Project Gutenberg.
