Convert 'id' and '_id' values in REST API tests to strings (#82681)
Follow-up from #77144 (comment) with converting id/_id to always be strings instead of integers. This makes the type value in the Elasticsearch specification be only string instead of string | number.

Add precommit task for detecting split packages (#73784)
Modularization of the JDK has been ongoing for several years. Recently
in Java 16 the JDK began enforcing module boundaries by default. While
Elasticsearch does not yet use the module system directly, there are
some side effects even for those projects not modularized (eg #73517).
Before we can even begin to think about how to modularize, we must
Prepare The Way by enforcing packages only exist in a single jar file,
since the module system does not allow packages to coexist in multiple
modules.

This commit adds a precommit check to the build which detects split
packages. The expectation is that we will add the existing split
packages to the ignore list so that any new classes will not exacerbate
the problem, and the work to cleanup these split packages can be
parallelized.

a92a647b9f Update sources with new SSPL+Elastic-2.0 license headers
As per the new licensing change for Elasticsearch and Kibana this commit
moves existing Apache 2.0 licensed source code to the new dual license
SSPL+Elastic license 2.0. In addition, existing x-pack code now uses
the new version 2.0 of the Elastic license. Full changes include:

 - Updating LICENSE and NOTICE files throughout the code base, as well
   as those packaged in our published artifacts
 - Update IDE integration to now use the new license header on newly
   created source files
 - Remove references to the "OSS" distribution from our documentation
 - Update build time verification checks to no longer allow Apache 2.0
   license header in Elasticsearch source code
 - Replace all existing Apache 2.0 license headers for non-xpack code
   with updated header (vendored code with Apache 2.0 headers obviously
   remains the same).
 - Replace all Elastic license 1.0 headers with new 2.0 header in xpack.

Convert most OSS plugins from integTest to [yaml | java]RestTest or internalClusterTest (#59444)
For all OSS plugins (except repository-* and discovery-*) integTest
task is now a no-op and all of the tests are now executed via a test,
yamlRestTest, javaRestTest, or internalClusterTest.

This commit does NOT convert the discovery-* and repository-* since they
are bit more complex then the rest of tests and this PR is large enough.
Those plugins will be addressed in a future PR(s).

This commit also fixes a minor issue that did not copy the rest api
for projects that only had YAML TEST tests.

Create plugin for yamlTest task (#56841)
This commit creates a new Gradle plugin to provide a separate task name
and source set for running YAML based REST tests. The only project
converted to use the new plugin in this PR is distribution/archives/integ-test-zip.
For which the testing has been moved to :rest-api-spec since it makes the most
sense and it avoids a small but awkward change to the distribution plugin.

The remaining cases in modules, plugins, and x-pack will be handled in followups.

This plugin is distinctly different from the plugin introduced in #55896 since
the YAML REST tests are intended to be black box tests over HTTP. As such they
should not (by default) have access to the classpath for that which they are testing.

The YAML based REST tests will be moved to separate source sets (yamlRestTest).
The which source is the target for the test resources is dependent on if this
new plugin is applied. If it is not applied, it will default to the test source
set.

Further, this introduces a breaking change for plugin developers that
use the YAML testing framework. They will now need to either use the new source set
and matching task, or configure the rest resources to use the old "test" source set that
matches the old integTest task. (The former should be preferred).

As part of this change (which is also breaking for plugin developers) the
rest resources plugin has been removed from the build plugin and now requires
either explicit application or application via the new YAML REST test plugin.

Plugin developers should be able to fix the breaking changes to the YAML tests
by adding apply plugin: 'elasticsearch.yaml-rest-test' and moving the YAML tests
under a yamlRestTest folder (instead of test)

Remove type parameter from ESIntegTestCase sugar methods (#48451)
ESIntegTestCase has a number of sugar index methods that prepare and execute
index requests. Now that index requests no longer use types, we can remove the
type parameter from each of these.

To prevent issues when re-compiling against the test framework, the method
`index(String index, String id, Object... source)` is renamed to `indexDoc`
so that e.g. `index(index, type, id, field1, field2, field3)` does not get re-interpreted
as an index request with an id of `type`.

Remove usage of FileSwitchDirectory (#42937)
We are still using `FileSwitchDirectory` in the case a user configures file based pre-load of mmaps. This is trappy for multiple reasons if the both directories used by `FileSwitchDirectory` point to the same filesystem directory. One issue is LUCENE-8835 that cause issues like #37111 - unless LUCENE-8835 isn't fixed we should not use it in elasticsearch. Instead we use a similar trick as we use for HybridFS and subclass mmap directory directly.

Both of these classes are basically a bloated wrapper around a simple

Store Pending Deletions Fix (#40345)
FilterDirectory.getPendingDeletions does not delegate, fixed
temporarily by overriding in StoreDirectory.

This in turn caused duplicate file name use after a trimUnsafeCommits
had been done, since a new IndexWriter would not consider the pending
deletes in IndexFileDeleter. This should only happen on windows (AFAIK).

Reenabled doing index updates for all tests using
IndexShardTests.indexOnReplicaWithGaps (which could fail due to above
when using mocked WindowsFS).

Added getPendingDeletions delegation to all elasticsearch
FilterDirectory subclasses that were not trivial test-only overrides to
minimize the risk of hitting this issue in another case.

Removes typed calls from YAML REST tests (#37611)
This PR attempts to remove all typed calls from our YAML REST tests. The PR adds include_type_name: false to create index requests that use a mapping and also to put mapping requests. It also removes _type from index requests where they haven't already been removed. The PR ignores tests named *_with_types.yml since this are specifically testing typed API behaviour.

The change also includes changing the test harness to add the type _doc to index, update, get and bulk requests that do not specify the document type when the test is running against a mixed 7.x/6.x cluster.

Make hits.total an object in the search response (#35849)
This commit changes the format of the `hits.total` in the search response to be an object with
a `value` and a `relation`. The `value` indicates the number of hits that match the query and the
`relation` indicates whether the number is accurate (in which case the relation is equals to `eq`)
or a lower bound of the total (in which case it is equals to `gte`).
This change also adds a parameter called `rest_total_hits_as_int` that can be used in the
search APIs to opt out from this change (retrieve the total hits as a number in the rest response).
Note that currently all search responses are accurate (`track_total_hits: true`) or they don't contain
`hits.total` (`track_total_hits: true`). We'll add a way to get a lower bound of the total hits in a
follow up (to allow numbers to be passed to `track_total_hits`).

Introduce index store plugins (#32375)
Today we allow plugins to add index store implementations yet we are not
doing this in our new way of managing plugins as pull versus push. That
is, today we still allow plugins to push index store providers via an on
index module call where they can turn around and add an index
store. Aside from being inconsistent with how we manage plugins today
where we would look to pull such implementations from plugins at node
creation time, it also means that we do not know at a top-level (for
example, in the indices service) which index stores are available. This
commit addresses this by adding a dedicated plugin type for index store
plugins, removing the index module hook for adding index stores, and by
aggregating these into the top-level of the indices service.

Add support for switching distribution for all integration tests (#30874)
* remove left-over comment

* make sure of the property for plugins

* skip installing modules if these exist in the distribution

* Log the distrbution being ran

* Don't allow running with integ-tests-zip passed externally

* top level x-pack/qa can't run with oss distro

* Add support for matching objects in lists

Makes it possible to have a key that points to a list and assert that a
certain object is present in the list. All keys have to be present and
values have to match. The objects in the source list may have additional
fields.

example:
```
  match:  { 'nodes.$master.plugins': { name: ingest-attachment }  }
```

* Update plugin and module tests to work with other distributions

Some of the tests expected that the integration tests will always be ran
with the `integ-test-zip` distribution so that there will be no other
plugins loaded.

With this change, we check for the presence of the plugin without
assuming exclusivity.

* Allow modules to run on other distros as well

To match the behavior of tets.distributions

* Add and use a new `contains` assertion

Replaces the previus changes that caused `match` to do a partial match.

* Implement PR review comments

ecb01c15b9 Fold InternalSearchHits and friends into their interfaces (#23042)
We have a bunch of interfaces that have only a single implementation
for 6 years now. These interfaces are pretty useless from a SW development
perspective and only add unnecessary abstractions. They also require
lots of casting in many places where we expect that there is only one

all of the classes final and removes the duplicate `foo` `getFoo` accessors
in favor of `getFoo` from these classes.

a95d4f4ee7 Add Location header and improve REST testing
This adds a header that looks like `Location: /test/test/1` to the
response for the index/create/update API. The requirement for the header
comes from https://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec10.html

https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc7231#section-7.1.2 claims that relative
URIs are OK. So we use an absolute path which should resolve to the
appropriate location.

Closes #19079

This makes large changes to our rest test infrastructure, allowing us
to write junit tests that test a running cluster via the rest client.
It does this by splitting ESRestTestCase into two classes:
* ESRestTestCase is the superclass of all tests that use the rest client
to interact with a running cluster.
* ESClientYamlSuiteTestCase is the superclass of all tests that use the
rest client to run the yaml tests. These tests are shared across all
official clients, thus the `ClientYamlSuite` part of the name.

502a775a7c Add primitive to shrink an index into a single shard (#18270)
This adds a low level primitive operations to shrink an existing
index into a new index with a single shard. This primitive expects
all shards of the source index to allocated on a single node. Once the target index is initializing on the shrink node it takes a snapshot of the source index shards and copies all files into the target indices data folder. An [optimization](https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-7300) coming in Lucene 6.1 will also allow for optional constant time copy if hard-links are supported by the filesystem. All mappings are merged into the new indexes metadata once the snapshots have been taken on the merge node.

To shrink an existing index all shards must be moved to a single node (one instance of each shard) and the index must be read-only:

```BASH
$ curl -XPUT 'http://localhost:9200/logs/_settings' -d '{
    "settings" : {
        "index.routing.allocation.require._name" : "shrink_node_name",
        "index.blocks.write" : true
    }
}
```
once all shards are started on the shrink node. the new index can be created via:

```BASH
$ curl -XPUT 'http://localhost:9200/logs/_shrink/logs_single_shard' -d '{
    "settings" : {
        "index.codec" : "best_compression",
        "index.number_of_replicas" : 1
    }
}'
```

This API will perform all needed check before the new index is created and selects the shrink node based on the allocation of the source index. This call returns immediately, to monitor shrink progress the recovery API should be used since all copy operations are reflected in the recovery API with byte copy progress etc.

The shrink operation does not modify the source index, if a shrink operation should
be canceled or if the shrink failed, the target index can simply be deleted and
all resources are released.
