Disallow new rollup jobs in clusters with no rollup usage. (#108624)
This change will add logic to the put rollup api that fails if no rollup job is active and no rollup index exists in the cluster.

The logic first check whether there is an active rollup persistent task if there are no active rollup persistent tasks, then it checks whether any rollup index exists. The latter check is an expensive check, but assuming that it only runs as part of the put rollup job api and only when there are no rollup jobs, this should be ok.

All tests that invoke the put rollup job api will need to be adjusted to create a dummy index that has rollup mapping metadata. Otherwise, tests can't create a rollup job.

Add support for addition configuration files to test clusters framework (#92579)
This adds the ability to supply arbitrary files to the config directory
of cluster nodes. Typically, this is used for security use cases, such
as providing for SSL certificates and trust stores.

This commit adds a few other features to enable more testing ues cases
as well, such as the ability to restart a cluster, as well as explicit
ordering of test cases withing a test class. This is needed for test
suites that need to execute some tests, restart the cluster, then
execute more in a particular order.

Move yaml rest test case to separate test lib (#84835)
The ESClientYamlSuiteTestCase is used to run yaml tests throughout
Elasticsearch. It utilizes the low level rest client in sniffing for
nodes, but the sniffer is not needed anywhere else in the test
framework.

This commit creates a new project, `:test:rest-runner` which is meant to
house the rest test running infrastructure. This has two purposes. First
is to remove the sniffer from the test framework dependencies, because
it transitively depends on Jackson. Second is to setup the runner for
future refactorings where it could be made to not depend on the entire
test framework, though how that could work is left for the future.

Remove system-index write-access from superuser role (#81400)
This commit changes the superuser role (as used by the "elastic"
builtin user) so that it no longer has any sort of write access to
restricted indices (system indices).
This improves the safety and security of the cluster, as it means
that there are no out-of-the-box users or roles that can write to,
delete or close the security index.

Superusers can still read from (and monitor) system indices.

Other roles (and users) can still access system indices as specified
in their descriptor. These can be custom such as the
"_es_test_root" role used in the integration test suite, or builtin
roles such as kibana_system.

Remove internal build logic from public build tool plugins (#72470)
Extract usage of internal API from TestClustersPlugin and PluginBuildPlugin and related plugins and build logic

This includes a refactoring of ElasticsearchDistribution to handle types
better in a way we can differentiate between supported Elasticsearch
Distribution types supported in TestCkustersPlugin and types only supported
in internal plugins.

It also introduces a set of internal versions of public plugins.

As part of this we also generate the plugin descriptors now.

As a follow up on this we can actually move these public used classes into
an extra project (declared as included build)

We keep LoggedExec and VersionProperties effectively public And workaround for RestTestBase

Warn users if security is implicitly disabled (#70114)
* Warn users if security is implicitly disabled

Elasticsearch has security features implicitly disabled by default for
Basic and Trial licenses, unless explicitly set in the configuration
file.
This may be good for onboarding, but it also lead to unintended insecure
 clusters.
 This change introduces clear warnings when security features are
 implicitly disabled.
 - a warning header in each REST response if security is implicitly
 disabled;
 - a log message during cluster boot.

a92a647b9f Update sources with new SSPL+Elastic-2.0 license headers
As per the new licensing change for Elasticsearch and Kibana this commit
moves existing Apache 2.0 licensed source code to the new dual license
SSPL+Elastic license 2.0. In addition, existing x-pack code now uses
the new version 2.0 of the Elastic license. Full changes include:

 - Updating LICENSE and NOTICE files throughout the code base, as well
   as those packaged in our published artifacts
 - Update IDE integration to now use the new license header on newly
   created source files
 - Remove references to the "OSS" distribution from our documentation
 - Update build time verification checks to no longer allow Apache 2.0
   license header in Elasticsearch source code
 - Replace all existing Apache 2.0 license headers for non-xpack code
   with updated header (vendored code with Apache 2.0 headers obviously
   remains the same).
 - Replace all Elastic license 1.0 headers with new 2.0 header in xpack.

Deprecate disabling basic-license features (#54816)
We believe there's no longer a need to be able to disable basic-license
features completely using the "xpack.*.enabled" settings. If users don't
want to use those features, they simply don't need to use them. Having
such features always available lets us build more complex features that
assume basic-license features are present.

This commit deprecates settings of the form "xpack.*.enabled" for
basic-license features, excluding "security", which is a special case.
It also removes deprecated settings from integration tests and unit
tests where they're not directly relevant; e.g. monitoring and ILM are
no longer disabled in many integration tests.

Remove deprecated third-party methods from tests (#55255)
I've noticed that a lot of our tests are using deprecated static methods
from the Hamcrest matchers. While this is not a big deal in any

need to upgrade. I've also switched a few other methods in tests that
have drop-in replacements.

Force selection of calendar or fixed intervals in date histo agg (#33727)
The date_histogram accepts an interval which can be either a calendar
interval (DST-aware, leap seconds, arbitrary length of months, etc) or
fixed interval (strict multiples of SI units). Unfortunately this is inferred
by first trying to parse as a calendar interval, then falling back to fixed
if that fails.

This leads to confusing arrangement where `1d` == calendar, but
`2d` == fixed. And if you want a day of fixed time, you have to
specify `24h` (e.g. the next smallest unit). This arrangement is very
error-prone for users.

This PR adds `calendar_interval` and `fixed_interval` parameters to any
code that uses intervals (date_histogram, rollup, composite, datafeed, etc).
Calendar only accepts calendar intervals, fixed accepts any combination of
units (meaning `1d` can be used to specify `24h` in fixed time), and both
are mutually exclusive.

The old interval behavior is deprecated and will throw a deprecation warning.
It is also mutually exclusive with the two new parameters. In the future the
old dual-purpose interval will be removed.

The change applies to both REST and java clients.

Purge Rollup doc ID upgrade code from 8.0 (#41227)
This is no longer needed in 8.x, because all jobs moving from 6.x to
7.x will be forced to upgrade their rollup ID if they haven't already.
So by time we get to 8.x, all jobs will be on the new scheme.

This removes the old CRC generator and all the flags and state checking
to manage it. We do need to keep the serialization check since a mixed
cluster will have 7.x nodes sending/receiving the flag, so that is
just hardcoded until 9.0 when we can remove it.

Remove xpack dependencies from qa rest modules (#41134)
This commit removes xpack dependencies of many xpack qa modules.
(for some qa modules this will require some more work)

The reason behind this change is that qa rest modules should not depend
on the x-pack plugins, because the plugins are an implementation detail and
the tests should only know about the rest interface and qa cluster that is
being tested.

Also some qa modules rely on xpack plugins and hlrc (which is a valid
dependency for rest qa tests) creates a cyclic dependency and this is
something that we should avoid. Also Eclipse can't handle gradle cyclic
dependencies (see #41064).

* don't copy xpack-core's plugin property into the test resource of qa
modules. Otherwise installing security manager fails, because it tries
to find the XPackPlugin class.

Make sure to reject mappings with type _doc when include_type_name is false. (#38270)
`CreateIndexRequest#source(Map<String, Object>, ... )`, which is used when
deserializing index creation requests, accidentally accepts mappings that are
nested twice under the type key (as described in the bug report #38266).

This in turn causes us to be too lenient in parsing typeless mappings. In
particular, we accept the following index creation request, even though it
should not contain the type key `_doc`:

```
PUT index?include_type_name=false
{
  "mappings": {
    "_doc": {
      "properties": { ... }
    }
  }
}
```

There is a similar issue for both 'put templates' and 'put mappings' requests
as well.

This PR makes the minimal changes to detect and reject these typed mappings in
requests. It does not address #38266 generally, or attempt a larger refactor
around types in these server-side requests, as I think this should be done at a
later time.

Re-deprecate xpack rollup endpoints (#36451)
Redeprecates the `/_xpack/rollup` endpoints in favor of `/_rollup`.

When we cleanup the rollup in a cluster containing 6.x nodes we need to
use `/_xpack/rollup` instead of `/_rollup` because the 6.x nodes don't
know about `/_rollup`. In those cases we must ignore the deprecation
warnings that the 7.0 node will return for the end point.

[Rollup] Job deletion should be invoked on the allocated task (#34574)
We should delete a job by directly talking to the allocated
task and telling it to shutdown. Today we shut down a job
via the persistent task framework. This is not ideal because,
while the job has been removed from the persistent task
CS, the allocated task continues to live until it gets the
shutdown message.

This means a user can delete a job, immediately delete
the rollup index, and then see new documents appear in
 the just-deleted index. This happens because the indexer
 in the allocated task is still running and indexes a few
more documents before getting the shutdown command.

In this PR, the transport action is changed to a TransportTasksAction,
and we invoke onCancelled() directly on the matching job.
The race condition still exists after this PR (albeit less likely),
but this was a precursor to fixing the issue and a self-contained
chunk of code. A second PR will followup to fix the race itself.

[Rollup] Only allow aggregating on multiples of configured interval (#32052)
We need to limit the search request aggregations to whole multiples
of the configured interval for both histogram and date_histogram.
Otherwise, agg buckets won't overlap with the rolled up buckets
and the results will be incorrect.

For histogram, the validation is very simple: request must be >= the config,
and modulo evenly.

Dates are more tricky.
- If both request and config are fixed dates, we can convert to millis
and treat them just like the histo
- If both are calendar, we make sure the request is >= the config with
a static lookup map that ranks the calendar values relatively. All
calendar units are "singles", so they are evenly divisible already
- We disallow any other combination (one fixed, one calendar, etc)

Build: Rework shadow plugin configuration (#32409)
This reworks how we configure the `shadow` plugin in the build. The major
change is that we no longer bundle dependencies in the `compile` configuration,
instead we bundle dependencies in the new `bundle` configuration. This feels
more right because it is a little more "opt in" rather than "opt out" and the
name of the `bundle` configuration is a little more obvious.

As an neat side effect of this, the `runtimeElements` configuration used when
one project depends on another now contains exactly the dependencies needed
to run the project so you no longer need to reference projects that use the
shadow plugin like this:

```
testCompile project(path: ':client:rest-high-level', configuration: 'shadow')
```

You can instead use the much more normal:

```
testCompile "org.elasticsearch.client:elasticsearch-rest-high-level-client:${version}"
```

Build: Shadow x-pack:protocol into x-pack:plugin:core (#32240)
This bundles the x-pack:protocol project into the x-pack:plugin:core
project because we'd like folks to consider it an implementation detail
of our build rather than a separate artifact to be managed and depended
on. It is now bundled into both x-pack:plugin:core and
client:rest-high-level. To make this work I had to fix a few things.

Firstly, I had to make PluginBuildPlugin work with the shadow plugin.
In that case we have to bundle only the `shadow` dependencies and the
shadow jar.

Secondly, every reference to x-pack:plugin:core has to use the `shadow`
configuration. Without that the reference is missing all of the
un-shadowed dependencies. I tried to make it so that applying the shadow
plugin automatically redefines the `default` configuration to mirror the
`shadow` configuration which would allow us to use bare project references
to the x-pack:plugin:core project but I couldn't make it work. It'd *look*
like it works but then fail for transitive dependencies anyway. I think
it is still a good thing to do but I don't have the willpower to do it
now.

Finally, I had to fix an issue where Eclipse and IntelliJ didn't properly
reference shadowed transitive dependencies. Neither IDE supports shadowing
natively so they have to reference the shadowed projects. We fix this by
detecting `shadow` dependencies when in "Intellij mode" or "Eclipse mode"
and adding `runtime` dependencies to the same target. This convinces
IntelliJ and Eclipse to play nice.

Fix rollup on date fields that don't support epoch_millis (#31890)
The rollup indexer uses a range query to select the next page
of results based on the last time bucket of the previous round
and the `delay` configured on the rollup job. This query uses
the `epoch_millis` format implicitly but doesn't set the `format`.
This result in errors during the rollup job if the field
definition doesn't allow this format. It can also miss documents
if the format is not accepted but another format in the field
definition is able to parse the query (e.g.: `epoch_second`).
This change ensures that we use `epoch_millis` as the only format
to parse the rollup range query.
