* Clarify that field data cache includes global ordinals
* Describe that the cache should be cleared once the limit is reached
* Clarify that the `_id` field does not supported aggregations anymore
* Fold the `fielddata` mapping parameter page into the `text field docs
* Improve cross-linking
Bucket aggregations compute bucket doc_count values by incrementing the doc_count by 1 for every document collected in the bucket.
When using summary fields (such as aggregate_metric_double) one field may represent more than one document. To provide this functionality we have implemented a new field mapper (named doc_count field mapper). This field is a positive integer representing the number of documents aggregated in a single summary field.
Bucket aggregations will check if a field of type doc_count exists in a document and will take this value into consideration when computing doc counts.
We don't need a special TypeFieldMapper for anything in particular; all access
to the type field can be done via a TypeFieldType that issues appropriate
deprecation warnings.

Moves the highlighting docs from the deprecated 'Request Body Search'
chapter to the new subpage of the 'Run a search chapter' section.
No substantive changes were made to the content.
Changes:
* Condenses and relocates the `docvalue_fields` example to the 'Run a search'
page.
* Adds docs for the `docvalue_fields` request body parameter.
* Updates several related xrefs.

It seemed confusing for users that our top-level mapping page still had a
prominent section named 'Mapping Type'. This PR reworks the docs to remove this
reference and adds a note about types removal (similar to the note we added to
other APIs like put mapping).
We currently emit a warning in 8x when a script refers to the _type field for
a document. However, in 8x this field no longer exists, so the deprecation
warning is not required.
Relates to #41059
In 7.x we added logic to the REST test harness to ignore warnings related to
types removal. This allowed us to continue to run mixed-cluster tests that
included 6.x nodes.
Now that master is on 8.x, we've no longer need to include 6.x nodes in testing
and have removed almost all typed calls. The logic to ignore warnings can
therefore be removed.
This PR makes the following updates:
* Update the supported query types to include `prefix` and `wildcard`.
* Specify that queries accept index aliases.
* Clarify that when querying on a remote index name, the separator `:` must be
present.
After deprecating the `enabled` setting for `_field_names`starting with 7.5,
this change disallows the setting on new indices in 8.0. The setting continues
to work for indices created in 7.x where we continue emitting a deprecation warning.
Relates to #42854
Currently we allow `_field_names` fields to be disabled explicitely, but since
the overhead is negligible now we decided to keep it turned on by default and
deprecate the `enable` option on the field type. This change adds a deprecation
warning whenever this setting is used, going forward we want to ignore and finally
remove it.
Closes#27239
* Default include_type_name to false for get and put mappings.
* Default include_type_name to false for get field mappings.
* Add a constant for the default include_type_name value.
* Default include_type_name to false for get and put index templates.
* Default include_type_name to false for create index.
* Update create index calls in REST documentation to use include_type_name=true.
* Some minor clean-ups around the get index API.
* In REST tests, use include_type_name=true by default for index creation.
* Make sure to use 'expression == false'.
* Clarify the different IndexTemplateMetaData toXContent methods.
* Fix FullClusterRestartIT#testSnapshotRestore.
* Fix the ml_anomalies_default_mappings test.
* Fix GetFieldMappingsResponseTests and GetIndexTemplateResponseTests.
We make sure to specify include_type_name=true during xContent parsing,
so we continue to test the legacy typed responses. XContent generation
for the typeless responses is currently only covered by REST tests,
but we will be adding unit test coverage for these as we implement
each typeless API in the Java HLRC.
This commit also refactors GetMappingsResponse to follow the same appraoch
as the other mappings-related responses, where we read include_type_name
out of the xContent params, instead of creating a second toXContent method.
This gives better consistency in the response parsing code.
* Fix more REST tests.
* Improve some wording in the create index documentation.
* Add a note about types removal in the create index docs.
* Fix SmokeTestMonitoringWithSecurityIT#testHTTPExporterWithSSL.
* Make sure to mention include_type_name in the REST docs for affected APIs.
* Make sure to use 'expression == false' in FullClusterRestartIT.
* Mention include_type_name in the REST templates docs.
* Replace custom type names with _doc in REST examples.
* Avoid using two mapping types in the percolator docs.
* Rename doc -> _doc in the main repository README.
* Also replace some custom type names in the HLRC docs.
* [DOCS] Rewords _field_names documentation
Corrects the language around when we write to `_field_names` and when you might want to disable it given that n recent versions it does not carry the indexing overhead it once did.

* Update wording following review
This adds a new `_ignored` meta field which indexes and stores fields that have
been ignored at index time because of the `ignore_malformed` option. It makes
malformed documents easier to identify by using `exists` or `term(s)` queries
on the `_ignored` field.
Closes#29494
Some features have been deprecated since `6.0` like the `_parent` field or the
ability to have multiple types per index. This allows to remove quite some
code, which in-turn will hopefully make it easier to proceed with the removal
of types.
Allowing `_doc` as a type will enable users to make the transition to 7.0
smoother since the index APIs will be `PUT index/_doc/id` and `POST index/_doc`.
This also moves most of the documentation to `_doc` as a type name.
Closes#27750Closes#27751
* Remove the _all metadata field
This change removes the `_all` metadata field. This field is deprecated in 6
and cannot be activated for indices created in 6 so it can be safely removed in
the next major version (e.g. 7).
This commit adds back "id" as the key within a script to specify a
stored script (which with file scripts now gone is no longer ambiguous).
It also adds "source" as a replacement for "code". This is in an attempt
to normalize how scripts are specified across both put stored scripts and script usages, including search template requests. This also deprecates the old inline/stored keys.
This change removes the `postings` highlighter. This highlighter has been removed from Lucene master (7.x) because it behaves
exactly like the `unified` highlighter when index_options is set to `offsets`:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-7815
It also makes the `unified` highlighter the default choice for highlighting a field (if `type` is not provided).
The strategy used internally by this highlighter remain the same as before, it checks `term_vectors` first, then `postings` and ultimately it re-analyzes the text.
Ultimately it rewrites the docs so that the options that the `unified` highlighter cannot handle are clearly marked as such.
There are few features that the `unified` highlighter is not able to handle which is why the other highlighters (`plain` and `fvh`) are still available.
I'll open separate issues for these features and we'll deprecate the `fvh` and `plain` highlighters when full support for these features have been added to the `unified`.
Currently global ordinals are documented under `fielddata`. It moves them to
their own file since they also work with doc values and fielddata is on the way
out.
Closes#23101
Now that indices have a single type by default, we can move to the next step
and identify documents using their `_id` rather than the `_uid`.
One notable change in this commit is that I made deletions implicitly create
types. This helps with the live version map in the case that documents are
deleted before the first type is introduced. Otherwise there would be no way
to differenciate `DELETE index/foo/1` followed by `PUT index/foo/1` from
`DELETE index/bar/1` followed by `PUT index/foo/1`, even though those are
different if versioning is involved.
This adds the `index.mapping.single_type` setting, which enforces that indices
have at most one type when it is true. The default value is true for 6.0+ indices
and false for old indices.
Relates #15613
Since `_all` is now deprecated and cannot be set for new indices, we should also
disallow any field that has the `include_in_all` parameter set.
